The first thing that comes in a common person's mind by hearing Spam word is Fraud. It may be somehow right but it has different meanings in your mails.
Some of the Spam mails can be sent by the intention of fraud but basically, all are not.

What does it means ?

The meaning of Spam messages in your mails is that sending the same mail to different individuals of the same category at the same time. It does not mean that if you send mail to your different friends or colleagues working together, your mail will be considered in Spam. A Spam mail is sent in bulk, not 10-20 or 30-40, but it is in 100's or 1000's.

Why and Who sends it ?

Generally, it sent by companies and are for the promotion of their services, for example, loan services, insurance, business, e-commerce, etc.

The mails which come are also not the random emails they are based on different things like your search history on google, different places at which you signed in, your check-ins, where you provide your numbers, the websites on which your mails are submitted and many more considering factors to which you could relate.

Are they useful ?

They are useless for most people and due to the chances of fraud most people don't even open them and delete directly them. But some people who found it useful go through them.

Are they safe ?

The people who found it useful should not blindly trust on spam messages, they are generally sent by the intention of business and money. They should cross-check them and then make a decision.
But you should also not blindly delete them because sometimes by mistake(very rarely), your mail service puts a non-spam mail to spam, due to it is sent in bulk or some other reasons.
